PortXpander
Q.The PortXpander icon is "X" out during start up.
A1. If PortXpander is connected onto the printer port, make sure to turn off "AppleTalk" before restarting or shutting down the computer. AppleTalk is part of the system software and can not be replaced by any other drivers. You can turn on AppleTalk from Chooser after the computer is on.A2. Extensions named "Serial Arbitrator" or "Open Tpt serial arbitrator" sometimes can cause conflict with PortXpander. Please use Extension Manager to disable these extension(s). A3. If PortXpander still not loading, please disable all the extensions except PortXpander driver and PortXpander menu and restart the computer. If Menu icon show up without "X", it means there's conflict within the extensions and you need filter out the incompatible extensions. If problem still persist, please call 800-644-1132 for assistance. Q. When I try to activate AppleTalk from Chooser, a message shows "AppleTalk will be active upon restart."
A. You have older versions of OpenTransport. Please download version 1.1.1 or above from Apple's website. Q. I get "System Error" message after installing PortXpander.
A. Sometime PortXpander Menu can cause conflict with other extensions. To eliminate the hassle filtering out the conflict file, please remove the PortXpander menu extension out of Extensions Folder and Custom install the Control Strip Module from the Installation diskette. Q. Can I use PortXpander with Global Village modem?
A. Using GV Modem to access internet is just like any other modems. However, GV Fax software requires dedicated serial port connected to the computer in order to send or receive incoming fax. Once the port is switched to another device you won't be able to switch back to use fax software. The fax software will be available after you restart the computer. If you use GV modem for FAX purpose, we suggest connect GV Modem in the modem port and use PortXpander in the Printer port.Q. Is PortXpander compatible with non-Power PC Computers?
A. Yes, PortXpander works with any Macintosh that runs system 7.1 and above.
Q. What's the ADB adapter on the PortXpander for? Can it be used on my PowerBook?
A. PortXpander will work with any PowerBook with Serial port and ADB port. The ADB adapter provides power for PortXpander. Since PortXpander requires very little power consumption, the ADB port on the PowerBook will supply more than enough power to PortXpander.Q. Does PortXpander automatically switch AppleTalk on and off?
A. No. If you want to use PortXpander on the printer port, make sure the AppleTalk is "Inactive" from the Chooser before restarting the computer, otherwise the printer port will be occupied by AppleTalk and PortXpander won't be able to load. If you need to use Apple talk, you can turn it on after the system is on.Q. Are there any known extensions that cause PortXpander not to load?
A.Extensions named "Serial Arbitrator" or "Open Tpt serial arbitrator" sometimes can cause conflict with PortXpander. Please use Extension Manager to disable these extension(s) .
Q. I can't make AOL work with PortXpander.
A. You need to configure AOL connection port to new PortXpander port before use.1. Open the Log-on window. ![]() 2. Click on "Setup" button. ![]() 3. Under "Modem Configuration", change "Port" setting to new corresponding port ( The new port you named for the modem). 4. Click "Save". Q. I have upgraded my system to OS 9 and since then, the PortXpander will not work.
A. The PortXpander driver v1.0.3 has been confirmed to support OS 9 and 9.0.4. If you have problem to use it after upgrading to new OS, please remove all PortXpander software from your system, download PortXpander driver v1.0.3 if necessary, reinstall it. In some cases, it is recommended to remove "PortXpander driver" and "PortXpander Menu" from Extension Folder, and just use "PortXpander" (or its alias on desktop) in Control Panel to switch between ports.
